Although I’m now happily based in Tacoma, Washington, I was born in Chicago and raised in Southern Indiana, so I’ll always consider myself a Midwesterner.
I’m the author of the historical novel The Good Doctor, and my short stories and essays have appeared in numerous literary journals across the country. In 2020, my essay “How to Repair a Bicycle,” was named a Notable Essay by Best American Sports Writing, and most recently, I been the lead deviser and writer for a full length play, Takhomeaway, adapted from the Andre Dubus short story “Townies.”
I’ve been the recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the US National Park Service, and in 2026 I will be serving as Fulbright Writer-in-Residence at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, where I’ll be completing my current book project.
I’m a graduate of Vanderbilt University (Go ‘Dores) and the MFA program in Creative Writing at Emerson College, and I’m currently Associate Professor of Arts, Media, and Culture at the University of Washington, Tacoma.
Outside of work, you can most often find me hanging out with my family, swimming laps, or camping in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
